SK Telecom has revealed that its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based mobile payment service T Pay has surpassed 100,000 subscribers just two weeks after launch.

T Pay offers the ability for customers to pay for purchases without touching their phones, and be charged through carrier billing. It is based on a BLE payment platform developed by SK Telecom.

After a user indicates that they want to pay with T Pay, the store's point of sale exchanges customer and payment information with the user's smartphone via BLE, identifying the user via nickname or mobile phone number. Users then complete payment by entering a registered password.

T Pay also offers a barode payment feature for improved security, generating one-time barcodes every three minutes. All payment related data is encrypted to protect personal information.

Customers using T Pay will be able to take advantage of the discounts provided under SK Telecom's T Membership rewards program without having to show their membership cards.

T Pay is open to customers aged 19 or older, and gives customers the ability to purchase up to 500,000 won ($430) per mobile number per billing month.

SK Telecom said T Pay is currently available at over 40% of its T Membership offline partner stores nationwide, and the operator aims to expand this to 90% by the third quarter.
