SingTel has revealed plans to deploy GPON over its FTTH network, paving the way for the introduction of 10Gbps services.

SingTel will make GPON services available to select customers during a pilot phase starting next quarter, and open it up to all fiber customers later in the year.

The operator is developing the service to support applications including 4K and later 8K streaming, remote medical services and online gaming.

“Over 70% of our customers are on fiber. We believe in constantly innovating and looking for ways to bring them better speeds using the newest technologies,” SingTel CTO Tay Soo Meng said.

“Most of these households already have multiple devices connected to their home network. The adoption of this technology will help us meet demand as the number of applications increase and become even more bandwidth intensive.”

SingTel rival M1 introduced 10Gbps fiber services for enterprises over the NG-NBN national fiber network earlier this month.

Hong Kong's PCCW-HKT meanwhile recently launched a 10Gbps FTTH service in Hong Kong through a collaboration with Huawei.
