PCCW-HKT has teamed up with Huawei to launch the world's first 10Gbps FTTH service in Hong Kong.

The companies will deploy Huawei's XG-PON gateway optical network terminal and MA5800 OLT to provide the 10Gbps broadband service.

HKT will initially offer the service for specified customer during a pilot phase commencing this quarter, and plans to make it available to all existing GPON customers in the third quarter.

The service promises 10Gbps download speeds, 1Gbps Wi-Fi speed and 5Gbps USB3.0 speed.

Downloading a 25Gbs HD movie will take a mere 20 seconds.

Huawei said 10Gbps FTTH will pave the way for multicast 4K streaming and facilitate instant sharing or information storage on cloud-based networks.

The company added that its SingleRAN equipment is currently serving over a third of broadband customers worldwide.

News of the collaboration comes weeks after HKT and Huawei jointly demonstrated 450Mbps LTE-Advanced over an IP-RAN using three-carrier aggregation.
