Chunghwa Telecom will implement SIM-based security software from Gemalto for its NFC payment trial with MasterCard and Taiwanese banks.

The operator will use Gemalto's UpTeq NFC SIM security technology for the trial.

The pilot is being supported by four Taiwanese banks - Cathay United, Chinatrust Commercial, E.Sun and Taishin - as well as HTC, Samsung and Sony.

Contactless NFC payments will be offered at around 20,000 point of sale readers supporting MasterCard's PayPass technology, including supermarkets, department stores and a taxi fleet.

The pilot will also test out NFC functions such as support for multiple credit and prepaid cards, as well as loyalty cards and coupons.
