Vodafone NZ will complete the rollout of its 3G network, to cover 97% of the population, by May 31, a year ahead of schedule, the company said. The operator has over 500,000 3G subscribers. NSN is installing the network.

Tata Communications has acquired an additional 30% stake in South African operator Neotel. The stake had been owned by operators Eskom and Transnet, Neotel said.Tata Com, in association with subsidiary Tata Africa Holdings, is now the controlling shareholder of Neotel.

The GSMA is working with Dialog Telekom to deploy ten solar and wind-powered base stations in Sri Lanka as part of its Green Power for Mobile program. The trial, which will deploy five off-grid and five on-grid base stations, has seen two sites go live this month and a further eight sites will go live in March and April this year.

Google has added support for a [canonical] tag, which aims to reduce the problems caused by duplicate search results by allowing webmasters to specify which version of a page is the original.

AIS's Q4 profit slumped 92% to 420 million baht ($12 million), and the company is bracing for a tough year ahead, Reuterssaid. Despite the slump, full-year net profit rose 0.7% to 16.4 billion baht.

State-owned China Central Television (CCTV) may team up with China Mobile to launch an internet-based TV station, with the goal of competing with YouTube-style portals and seizing "the [propaganda] high ground," SCMP.com said.

The global optical networking market topped $4 billion for the fourth time in five quarters in Q4 2008, but fell 5% year-on-year, Ovum said.
