The Associated Press reports that Kenyan game wardens have a new weapon to stop crop raiding elephants - mobile phones on elephant collars set to text rangers if the elephant approaches park boundaries. The damage a few elephants can do to a Kenyan farm in a few minutes can destroy a family's livelihood.

When Kimani, a huge bull elephant, approaches villagers' crops, a text message flashes on ranger Richard Lesowapir's phone and soon a jeep arrives with spotlights and frightens Kimani back to the park boundaries.

Elephants learn quickly. Kimani has learned the boundaries of Ol Pejeta with only a few warnings and apparently communicate to other elephants the importance of honoring the boundaries. Google Earth can track the elephants within the park and helps map out travel corridors between protected areas.
