Mobile video delays said to raise churn

Buffering remains the biggest barrier to mobile video viewing, with the majority of users abandoning download attempts due to the delay, research by Israeli network optimization firm Flash Networks shows.

The firm found that 73% of mobile users give up trying to download mobile video after just eight seconds of buffering. It claims subscribers who abandon attempts to access video are more likely to churn due to the frustration, and that operators must be flexible when it comes to optimization options as a result.

”It’s not enough to help operators minimize subscriber frustration; they must also have the capabilities to act upon this information to provide high quality of service and customer satisfaction,” says Liam Galin, President and CEO of Flash Networks.

The firm drew its video usage stats from its operator customers, which it claims are tier-one carriers with subscribers numbering in the millions.
