Motorola unveiled two Wimax initiatives at the Mobile World Congress on Monday in an attempt to strengthen its position in the emerging Wimax market.

In the first, the US vendor's VC arm Motorola Ventures bought a stake in startup DesignArt Networks, a supplier of Wimax system-on-chip solutions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

DesignArt Networks, whose investors also include Carmel Ventures and Magma Venture Partners, has developed a silicon platform which could dramatically lower Wimax deployment and operational costs, Motorola said.

Separately, Motorola has licensed its Wimax chipset-based radio reference design, WTM1000 chipset modem solution, and essential IP to third parties.

The licensing would broaden the market opportunity and accelerate the development of a wider array of Wimax-enabled devices for consumers, Motorola said.

It said wireless network solutions provider Enfora had become the first licensee.
