Boutique Singapore ISP ViewQwest has launched a plug-and-play VPN service to allow consumers to access content from international OTT video services.

Unlike its previous media streamer, which was available only to ViewQwest subscribers, this new 4K-enabled media streamer is also available to non-subscribers.

The Viewqwest TV 4K streaming media player will be on sale offering 20 streaming apps, which includes Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go and BBC iPlayer. Users can also install their own favourite apps from the Google Play Store onto the Android-powered device.

The box is powered by an Amlogic S812 quad-core processor with an eight core Mali graphics chip, along with 2GB of memory and 8GB of storage.

Access however, is just one piece of the puzzle as users will still have to find ways to subscribe and pay for these services. Some of the sites require a subscription before they can be accessed.

ViewQwest chief executive officer Vignesa Moorthy said this is the first time it’s offering the VPN access to non-subscribers. He also confirmed that even though their latest media streamer is running on Android 4.4.1, it will be updated once the firmware is updated.

The ViewQwest box will cost S$249 ($176) when ordered online from their store during this week’s Comex show, and comes with a year’s subscription of the company’s Freedom VPN service, which usually goes for S$10.70 a month. The normal price for the box is S$299.
