Singapore's ST Electronics will deploy its taxi dispatch and management system for a government-owned firm in the United Arab Emirates.

The company said it was awarded an $8 million contract by Sharjah Transport, a state-owned firm which runs all public transport services in the emirate.

Sharjah will deploy a system based on ST Electronics' iCab automated taxi booking and dispatch system, which uses wireless and GPS technologies.

ST Electronics will design, implement and maintain the system for Sharjah's various taxi fleets over a period of 15 months starting July.

ST Electronics is the electronics arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering or ST Engineering).

Sharjah Transport owns exclusive rights to regulate, control and franchise passenger transport services including taxis, intra-emirate and inter-emirates mass transport within the UAE.

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven emirates which form the UAE, and is located next to Dubai.
