Spanish incumbent Telefonica claims to be leading the market by launching a platform combining machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and smart meter infrastructure management.

The operator states the connected metering platform will help utility firms launch smart meters by automating management of the meters’ communications, and providing operational data. Those elements will help to cut operating costs, enable utilities to be independent of hardware manufacturers, and ensure smart meters comply with security policies, Telefonica claims.

“Smart meters are a first step towards the smart grid of the future which will transform the provision of utility services,” explains Carlos Morales, director of M2M and cloud at Telefónica Digital, adding. “With our Connected Metering Platform we have listened to the needs of utilities companies and created a flexible, scalable and integrated service to support their smart meter deployments.”
