Australia-based IoT network operator Thinxtra has announced the deployment of a low-power wide area (LPWA) network based on Sigfox technology at Science Park.

Thinxtra has deployed its first Sigfox base stations and antenna at Science Park to allow companies on the campus to access an open network offering reliable connectivity for IoT devices over a wide area.

Companies will be able to use the network to create new IoT sensors, develop devices and platforms as well as innovative IoT applications for intelligent manufacturing, smart city and other applications.

Thinxtra plans to deploy a city-wide Sigfox LPWA network in Hong Kong and aims to cover 95% of the population by the end of the year.

The company recently secured a cornerstone investment of up to A$10 million (HK$61.7 million) from Australia's Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) to fulfil this ambition, as well as its goals of achieving the same percentage of population coverage in Australia and New Zealand.

In Hong Kong, the company is also collaborating on R&D and working with partners such as Victory Concept on the design of devices, sensors and solutions.

“With this installation at Hong Kong Science Park, we have reached one of our first milestones for creating an exciting test bed for LPWAN IoT networks in Hong Kong,” Thinxtra Asia managing director Murray Hankinson said.

“We chose to partner with HKSTP due to its leadership in innovation and the sharing of a common belief that Hong Kong has the potential to be a world-leading IoT design and manufacturing hub.”
