Barcelona Officially Announces Dismissal Of Xavi As Head Coach

Head coach of the La Liga club Barcelona Xavier Hernandez (Xavi) has officially been relieved of his duties, as announced by the Blaugrana press office on May 24.

As reported prior to the announcement by sports journalist Fabrizio Romano on his social media page, Barcelona President Joan Laporta personally informed the 44-year-old coach of his dismissal. Marca newspaper had revealed Laporta's intention to part ways with Xavi on May 21, citing the coach’s criticism of the club's financial situation.

On May 23, AS and Sky Sport reported that former coach of Bayern Munich and the German national team Hans-Dieter Flick can become the new coach of Barcelona, with a contract agreement already reached until the end of June 2026.

As of the 37th round of the 2023/2024 La Liga season, the Blaugrana sit in second place in the league standings, accumulating 82 points and trailing behind the title-winning Real Madrid by 12 points. Additionally, Barcelona lost to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, and exited in the quarter-finals of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
