Spanish referee Lahoz suspended from 2022 World Cup after Argentina vs Netherlands match

Spanish referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz will no longer be employed at matches of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, informs radio station Cope.

Lahoz officiated Argentina's quarterfinal game against the Netherlands (2-2, on penalties - 4-3) at the 2022 World Cup. He showed 17 yellow cards to players of both teams, setting a World Cup record. Argentina's captain Lionel Messi criticized the referee after the match.

Lahoz officiated a total of three matches at the 2022 World Cup, including group-stage games between Qatar vs Senegal and Iran vs United States.
