The series with Cincinnati is the fourth for San Diego this season. The Padres managed to win only one of their first three, away from Arizona. Then Bob Melvin's team failed on the road against division rival San Francisco, 4-2, 2-13, 1-2. And the home series with reigning champion Atlanta Braves ended in a 12-1, 2-5, 2-5, 2-1 draw. The Padres come into the game against Cincinnati with a 6-5 balance and only fourth place in the National League West Division.
Sean Manaea, a former Oakland Athletics player, is the starting pitcher for the first meeting with the Reds. The 30-year-old pitcher has managed two starts this season, allowing just two runs in 13 innings of games against Arizona (3-0) and San Francisco (1-2).
Cincinnati lost almost everything
After starting the season with a good 2-2 away win against Atlanta (6-3, 6-7, 1-2, 6-3), David Bell's team went on to lose six straight matches. First, the Reds were beaten twice at home by Cleveland, 5-10, 3-7. Then they were knocked off by the Dodgers in Los Angeles, losing all 4 games, 3-9, 1-3, 2-5, 1-9. Cincinnati have been firmly entrenched as one of the league's main outsiders since the start of the season.
First-year starter Nick Lodolo will pitch for the Reds in the first game against San Diego. In his MLB debut, the 24-year-old pitcher allowed five runs in four innings against Cleveland (3-7).
Expert Betting Tips
The Padres have had a poor start to the season, so a series against one of the league's top underdogs, the Cincinnati Reds, is probably seen by the Californians as a great opportunity to improve their win-loss balance. Last season, the Padres took all but one game from the Reds. Perhaps we should expect something similar in the new season.
