Preston have surprised many spectators this season after finishing in 12th place last year. Since their 1-1 draw with Bristol City to start the season, Ryan Lowe's team has performed exceptionally well, winning five games in a row and sitting at the top of the Championship table. Their latest victory came against Plymouth Argyle at Deepdale, with Duane Holmes scoring in just 45 seconds and Liam Millar adding a goal on his debut. Although Plymouth managed to score one goal in the second half, Preston held on to win their third consecutive home game with a 2-1 scoreline. It is worth noting that the league leaders previously defeated Birmingham 2-1 at St. Andrew's in March, but they have not been successful in their last three home matches against them.

Birmingham had a positive start to the 2023-24 season, earning 11 points from their first five league matches. They drew with Swansea City in their first game but then won three consecutive matches before a 1-1 draw against Millwall at home. Birmingham appeared to be heading towards another draw against Watford but a red card from Lee Buchanan changed the outcome. Watford took advantage of the extra man and scored two goals in stoppage time, resulting in Birmingham's first defeat of the season. Despite this loss, Birmingham still holds a promising position in the Championship table, dropping from fourth to sixth place after finishing 17th last season. They will be looking for a quick response in their upcoming match, drawing inspiration from their 1-0 victory at Deepdale last season.

Preston is currently displaying unstoppable form, having emerged victorious in all three of their home league games this season. It is anticipated that they will capitalize on their home advantage once more and narrowly defeat Birmingham in their forthcoming Tuesday match.
