How does the Ballon d'Or voting work?
The Ballon d'Or winner is determined through a two-step voting process. First, journalists from France Football and L'Equipe collaborate to create a shortlist of 30 nominees, based on players' performances during the previous season. Occasionally, former players may also contribute to this selection process.
Next, one football journalist from each of the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations is invited to rank their top 10 players from the shortlist. Points are allocated based on their rankings: 15 points for first place, 12 for second, 10 for third, followed by 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively.
After all votes are submitted, the points are totaled, and the player with the highest score is crowned the Ballon d'Or winner. The remaining players are ranked from second to 30th. In the event of a tie, the number of first-place votes is used as a tiebreaker. If the tie persists, second-place votes are considered, followed by subsequent rankings as needed.
