The announcement was made during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday, marking a monumental chapter in India’s sporting journey.

According to the CGF statement
The decision confirms that the world’s most populous nation will stage the landmark edition of the Games, after delegates of the 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories ratified India’s bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.

The CGF further noted, “India presented a compelling vision for the 2030 Games, centred in the Gujarat city of Amdavad (Ahmedabad), which will build on foundations laid by Glasgow 2026, enabling India to celebrate the centenary in style.”

A Historic Return After Two Decades

This decision marks India’s first time hosting the Games since New Delhi 2010, ending a 20-year gap. Celebrations erupted at New Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, where the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) held a special ceremony.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, senior Indian Olympic Association members, the Sports Secretary, MYAS and SAI officials, Olympians, Commonwealth medallists and prominent athletes — a gathering that reflected India’s growing sporting ambition.

Mandaviya: “India Is Ready. India Is Capable. India Has Arrived.”

Calling it a historic day, Dr. Mandaviya said, “Organising the 100th year of CWG in 2030 is important for both the CGF and also us as the hosts. Under Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India's sports sector is transforming. Hosting events like the Boxing World Cup, Hockey World Cup, World Para Athletics and more shows that we are ready to host international competitions of the highest level.”

Dr. Mandaviya
We are also getting ready to host the 2029 World Police Games and these will all further our arrangements for the 2036 Olympic Games, which we are hopeful of hosting. The Khelo Bharat Niti and the Sports Governance Act is also going to fuel our transformation and reformation of Indian sports. In the next 10 years, India will be in the top 10, and by 2047, we will be in the top 5. I now urge all athletes to get ready to make the nation proud.

Highlighting global recognition of India’s progress, Dr. Mandaviya said leaders including the International Paralympic Committee President, the World Para Athletics President, the World Boxing President, several eminent athletes who participated in WPAC 2025 and Cuban Olympic legend Javier Sotomayer had all praised India's readiness. “Such recognition reinforces what the world already feels: India is ready. India is capable. India has arrived.”

Celebration Through Sport, Culture and Sustainability

The ceremony in Delhi featured a specially curated audio-visual film tracing India’s Commonwealth Games legacy, from its medal milestones to hosting the 2010 Games. This was followed by a laser show, fireworks and the unveiling of the official hashtag: #CWG2030InBHARAT, representing India’s vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.

In keeping with India’s sustainability commitments, only green, non-polluting crackers were used during the celebrations.

India’s Commonwealth Games Record

India delivered a standout performance when it last hosted the Games in 2010, winning 101 medals including 38 gold, with 30 medals coming from Shooting alone. In the 2022 edition in Birmingham, where Shooting was not included, India finished with 61 medals, including 22 gold.
