Apple has released an iTunes software update which prevents the program from synching with Palm's Pre handset.

With the launch of iTunes 8.2.1 Apple has made good on last month's veiled threat to block the Pre's iTunes synching function. Apple said the update "addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices."

Apple has confirmed to Dow Jones Newswires that the update "disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods."

A Palm spokesperson toldBloomberg that the move deals a "direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience," and said Pre users could either not update iTunes, or transfer their music via an external drive.

There are also a number of third party synching programs available, PCWorld said.

iTunes used to support certain third-party MP3 players, but now only synchs with Apple devices.
