China Mobile, Dutch telco KPN and its subsidiary iBasis have completed a field trial of IMS-based international VoLTE roaming.

The operators are testing the technology ahead of the planned commercial implementation of VoLTE roaming between China and the Netherlands.

China Mobile plans to commercially launch VoLTE at the end of the year and introduce VoLTE roaming in future.

Huawei provided network components for the trial. China Mobile International and iBasis provided the IPX connectivity. The iBasis IPX connects to companies around the world.

China Mobile partnered with Korea Telecom in June, with plans to introduce cross-border VoLTE roaming by the end of November. The demonstration involved HD video calls.

India-based Tata Communications meanwhile added VoLTE roaming capabilities to its IPX network in February.
