Digital Realty and Savvis opened their joint venture 180,000 square-foot data center in Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate on Tuesday.

The Uptime Institute-certified Tier III data center is built to operate at 99.999 percent uptime, with links to more than 240 communications operators, said Kris Kumar, senior VP and regional head, Asia Pacific at Digital Realty.

He added that the facility is designed to accommodate telecom, enterprise IT, and cloud service providers.

“Hong Kong serves as the gateway for the vast majority of global financial firms, media companies and consumer brands seeking entry into mainland China,” said Gery Messer, managing director of Savvis, Asia Pacific.

“The launch of the Hong Kong facility represents a significant milestone in Savvis’ strategy of expanding to meet the demands of global businesses requiring a secure, reliable and consistent IT-service experience across the regions in which they operate.”

According to a recent survey conducted by international research firm Vanson Bourne for Savvis, Hong Kong will surpass the global percentage average of firms that outsource IT infrastructure by 2015, with nearly 80% of organizations outsourcing to colocation, managed hosting and cloud environments, Messer noted.
