Nokia chairman Ollila to step down

Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila has sparked rumors of sweeping managerial changes at the firm, announcing he will leave the firm in 2012. This comes hot on the heels of the appointment of Nokia’s first non-Finnish CEO Stephen Elop, and just a day after the firm’s smartphone chief Anssi Vanjoki resigned.

MetroPCS launches first US LTE network

MetroPCS has launched the US’ first commercial LTE service as well as the country’s first LTE phone. The company debuted the service in Las Vegas, with a $55 service plan that provides unlimited talk, text and data, and a $60 plan that adds access to MetroSTUDIO, a new VOD and multimedia service in partnership with RealNetworks.

Sprint trio exit Clearwire board

Three Sprint executives have quit the board of US Wimax operator Clearwire, in a move analysts say clears the way for fresh investment. Sprint CEO Daniel Hesse, Keith Cowan and Steven Elfman resigned from the carrier Thursday, a few days after reports revealed Clearwire was seeking additional investment to fund its next round of network buildouts.

Ericsson buys Nortel's multi-service switch business

Ericsson has entered into a $65-million agreement to acquire Nortel's multi-service switch business (MSS). This gives Ericsson access to a strong product portfolio and installed base in the data segment while ensuring the supply of the MSS platform for the recently acquired CDMA and GSM units.

Taiwan carrier gets ZTE 3G gear

Taiwan’s operator VIBO Telecom has contracted ZTE to supply WCDMA wireless equipment. Under the agreement, ZTE will provide more than 3,500 3G base-stations to replace VIBO’s existing 3G network around Taiwan within one year.

Mobyland debuts 1800MHz LTE/EPC network in Poland

Poland’s Mobyland, with the cooperation of CenterNet, launched the world’s first commercial 1800MHz LTE/EPC network using Huawei’s end-to-end long term evolution/evolved packet core solution. Mobyland is now able to provide mobile broadband service to operators and their end-users with peak downlink speeds of more than 146 Mbps per user.

Packet One taps Avaya for Malaysia trunking service

Packet One Networks (Malaysia) and Avaya have sealed a memorandum of understanding on collaboration. The MOU names Avaya as the preferred technology partner for P1 next-generation voice session initiation protocol (NGV SIP) trunking service for enterprise markets.

Mobile Wimax users reach 59m in 2015

The number of subscribers to mobile Wimax services will approach 59 million in 2015, according to new projections from ABI Research. ABI Research also sees Wimax base station shipments continuing to grow, albeit at a slowing pace, through the forecast period.

Singapore Airline, OnAir offer inflight connectivity

Customers travelling on Singapore Airlines flights will soon be able to stay connected at all times with OnAir's inflight connectivity services based on Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband. The collaboration provides passengers with access to Wi-Fi internet and mobile telephony services.
