First 100G research backbone in Asia deployed

Research and education facilities in Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan will be able to take advantage of a newly-deployed dedicated 100G subsea cable network provisioned by PCCW Global.

Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) collaborated with the National Supercomputing Centre of Singapore (NSCC) and the Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN) to commission the first 100G international research and education backbone network in Asia.

The network will take advantage of PCCW Global's subsea cable capacity to provide quality interconnections and network resilience for research and education network users of the network.

The link will allow the research and education community to complete a new ring network, the Asia-Pacific Ring (APR), spanning across the Pacific between Asia and North America, with landing stations in Seattle and Los Angeles as well as Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The APR project will involve the international research and education networks SingAREN, NII, Internet2, WIDE Project, Pacific Wave, and TransPAC as well as NICT.

“Working with SingAREN represents an exciting opportunity for us, because not only have we been able to provide a 100G network capacity for the Singapore - Hong Kong - Japan route, but we will also be in a position to assist other research and education networks in the region,” PCCW Global SVP of global sales and presales Frederick Chui commented.
