iPhone hacker's group the iPhone Dev Team has succeeded in its attempt to unlock the iPhone 3G for use on any GSM network.
Codenamed yellowsn0w, the unlocking tool will be released to the public on new years' eve, the team has announced on its blog.
The tool will require a jailbroken iPhone 3G running a 2.11.07 or earlier baseband. It will be installable via the Cydia iPhone installer application, which supports both Mac and PC.
The group has promised to publish a video detailing the unlocking method on its site before Christmas.
InformationWeek points out that the tool may have limited appeal in the iPhone's native market - the US - as exclusive iPhone carrier AT&T and rival 3G provider T-Mobile use different 3G technologies. This means 3G connectivity will only be available on AT&T.
But the procedure is likely to have much more appeal in parts of the world where 3G services are more standardised, particularly in countries where the iPhone is still not officially available.
