NTT plans to cut the rates it charges other service providers to use its fibre-optic lines, a source familiar with the matter, quoted by a Reuters report, said.
Japan's communications regulator has been pressuring NTT to cut its rates to lower the barrier for providers to enter the market and help accelerate the spread of high-speed internet access, the Reuters report said.
NTT rival Softbank is among the companies that currently use NTT's lines to provide fiber-optic service, the report said.
NTT East Corp and NTT West, the former state monopoly's regional units, plan to cut their rates by 7 % and 0.5% respectively from the next fiscal year starting in April, the source said.
NTT East and West are planning to submit the proposed cuts to Japan's communications regulator this month for approval, the source said.
A spokesman for NTT said nothing has been decided.
