NTT DoCoMo, Renesas, Fujitsu and Sharp have all joined forces to develop a single-chip Large Scale Integration (LSI), as well as a phone platform to support it.

The SH-Mobile G4 single-chip LSI device will support the HSUPA/HSDPA/W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE standards.

It has been designed to provide improved HD video and 3D graphics performance.

The chip will use HSDPA cat.8 to achieve downlink speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, and the HSUPA standard for uplink speeds of up to 5.7Mbps.

DoCoMo and Renesas will develop the chip, with Fujitsu and Sharp contributing to the supporting platform.

This will be the fourth product to emerge out of the collaboration between DoCoMo and Renesas.

The platform is targeted for completion by March 2010.

DoCoMo has been fuelling the rumour mill this week with speculation it is interested in acquiring a 26% stake in Indian operator Tata Teleservices (TTSL).

But parent company Tata Communications has denied the rumours, with a spokesperson telling Reuters the company had no plans to sell a stake in TTSL at this stage.
