Opera said its latest browser-update for Android includes a video-compression feature to enhance data savings.

The Norway-headquartered company said being able to watch and share videos online from one’s phone is pretty handy, but this habit can be a big data-eater and poor connections can be a let down.

The video compression in Opera for Android shrinks the size of online videos, making it possible for users to spend more time enjoy their favorite video content, without having to wait for stalled videos to unfreeze – or for those annoying buffering wheels to stop spinning.

“Enabling the video compression feature, will give you faster-loading videos and overall data savings – and it will save your precious time, as well,” the company said.

The technology behind Opera’s video compression feature is supplied by our Rocket Optimizer mobile-video-optimization solution, which promises to instantly and surgically optimize nearly any video, enabling instant full transcoding, providing a 60% boost in bandwidth capacity, while preserving the best visual quality in the industry.

It’s currently live around the world with several mobile operators, as well as powering the video-compression capabilities for Opera Mini and Opera Max.
