The user friendly additions Sony Ericsson plans to include in its debut Windows Mobile device were initially frowned upon by Microsoft, company insiders have revealed.

Aimed at busy professionals looking to use a smartphone for work and leisure, the Xperia X1 is to include a series of customizable panel items which launch applications at the click of a button.

Microsoft was initially hesitant to approve this addition - until Sony Ericsson demonstrated the front-end. Now the front-end has Microsoft's full support.

While designing the smartphone, Sony Ericsson has departed from Microsoft standards in at least one other respect - the X1 will use the Opera browser by default even though Internet Explorer will be included.
