Telekom Brunei is deploying a nationwide carrier Wi-Fi service, and has contracted vendor Aptilo Networks to provide the platform for the service.

The network will consist of around 60 hotspots in various locations across the country, the companies have announced.

Aptilo will provide its Service Management Platform for the offering to support seamless handoffs when roaming between hotspots.

Telekom Brunei will initially offer 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi to customers requesting an SMS code, and soon plans to offer prepaid access through vouchers and postpaid access for existing fixed wireless customers.

The operator will also monetize the network by using it to enable Wi-Fi services to verticals including sports venues, airports and coffee shops. The operator will likewise offer wholesale capacity to domestic mobile operators and to international operators via roaming agreements..

"Carrier Wi-Fi is key to customer retention, and is also a compelling business-to-business proposition that generates revenue for carriers," Aptilo Networks managing director for APAC Jan Sjönell said. "We are proud to work with TelBru on this exciting project."
