Yesterday there was yet another M&A to add to the list of the month-long spurt of inorganic activity. This time it is in the arena of wholesale carrier voice, and to a lesser extent submarine cables. UNIFI Communications has acquired WIS Telecom from Orascom TMTI, which is of course controlled by the Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris.

UNIFI is based in New York City, and focuses on voice termination. Along with the node in New York City, they have endpoints across Europe and Africa.

WIS, previously known as WIND International Services, has most of its focus in southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and northern Africa. WIS Telecom handles some 800M voice minutes worth of traffic, while UNIFI handles just over 1B voice minutes.

In addition, WIS operates a submarine cable between Italy and Greece, while UNIFI operates one between Italy and Albania. The two footprints are quite complementary on multiple fronts, therefore, and there are certainly going to by synergies available.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
