Wateen Telecom-Pakistan has signed a contract with network equipment supplier Motorola to acquire 198,000 end-user Wimax customer premises equipment (CPE) devices for both indoor and outdoor use, according to Motorola.

These CPEs are meant to provide access to broadband services like voice over IP (VoIP) for individual users, small businesses and enterprise companies.

With its nationwide Wimax network – which was also supplied by Motorola – Wateen Telecom is likewise eyeing to provide high-end data services like virtual private networks (VPN) for banks and other organizations.

Tariq Malik, Wateen Telecom's CEO, said his company is the first to offer Wimax 802.16e-based broadband voice and data services in Pakistan.

Due to Pakistan's growing economy, Wateen Telecom expects its Wimax services to pick up within the first year of operations especially among home users.
