Basketball Player Facing Death Penalty Over Edibles Gives First Interview After Arrest

American basketball player Jarred Shaw, who played for the Indonesian team Tangerang Hawks, gave his first interview since his arrest in May this year.

I use cannabis as a medicine. I have an inflammatory condition called Crohn’s disease that’s incurable. There’s no medicine apart from cannabis that stops my stomach from aching.

He was detained at the airport on charges of importing 132 cannabis-infused chewing candies, a violation that could result in a long prison sentence or even the death penalty according to the local law.

Shaw admitted it was a stupid mistake and expressed fears he might spend the rest of his life in prison. He described his first two months after arrest as extremely difficult, feeling helpless, alone, and even unwilling to wake up.
