Luka Doncic Doesn’t See Himself Playing Pro Basketball at 41

Luka Doncic, the shooting guard and point guard for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and the Slovenia national team, was asked whether he expects to still be playing at age 41.

Luka Doncic for The Wall Street Journal
Owning a basketball team is something I’m very, very interested in. Do I see myself playing basketball at 41? No, I don’t think so.

The 26‑year‑old Slovenian, who won EuroBasket 2017 with his national team, has played for the Lakers since February 2025. Before that he played for Real Madrid and the Dallas Mavericks. In the 2024-25 NBA season Doncic appeared in 28 regular‑season games for the Lakers and five playoff games, averaging 29.2 points. On August 2 he extended his contract with the club for three more years.

On September 6 Doncic set Slovenia’s all‑time scoring record for the national team: after the EuroBasket 2025 group stage he had scored 1,100 points, passing Goran Dragić’s previous mark of 1,095.
