According to NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum in an interview with talkSPORT, the league intends to launch a new basketball tournament project in Europe within two years.
On March 28, 2025, the NBA, together with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), issued a press release stating that the organizations are considering creating a new professional basketball league called NBA Europe, designed to be an alternative to the EuroLeague. The NBA is exploring the possibility of a franchise fee ranging from $500 million to $1 billion and has already involved analysts to refine the business plan.
Tatum said that in its initial phase, the new tournament will cover seven leading basketball countries in Europe: the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey, and Greece. NBA Europe participants may include both existing teams and potential new clubs. It was previously noted that the competition would feature 16 teams, 12 of which will be permanent. Until new modern infrastructure is built, NBA Europe games may take place in existing arenas.
