Sergio Scariolo has been appointed head coach of the Real Madrid basketball team, according to an announcement from the team’s press service. This comes after the departure of Chus Mateo, who had been the head coach since 2022.
Scariolo has signed a three-year contract that runs until June 30, 2028.
Under Mateo's leadership, Real Madrid won the Spanish Championship twice and the EuroLeague title in 2023. He was also named the best coach of the tournament in 2024.
In the previous EuroLeague season, Real Madrid finished in seventh place in the regular season and were eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing to Olympiacos 1–3 in the series.
