The biographical drama “Christy,” which chronicles the life of legendary American boxer Christy Martin, opened in U.S. theaters to extremely poor returns – just $1.25 million over its first three days.
According to Deadline, the film landed in 11th place at the North American box office despite being shown in 2,814 theaters.
For Sydney Sweeney, this marks her third box office disappointment of 2025, following “Eden” and “Americana,” both of which also failed to surpass the $2 million mark in their opening weekends. After the breakout success of the romantic comedy “Anyone But You” – which grossed $220.3 million on a modest budget – the actress is now experiencing a clear downturn.
Although the film has received middling reviews from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), “Christy” shows slight improvement compared to Sweeney’s previous releases. Industry analysts predict the movie could climb into the weekend’s top 10 by Sunday.
Film experts believe a potential turning point in the actress’s career may come with the December 19 release of the thriller “The Maid,” in which Sweeney stars alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar under the direction of Paul Feig.
