Devin Haney To Remain WBC Champion Despite Loss To Ryan Garcia

World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman said that Devin Haney retained the WBC super lightweight title because, according to the organization's rules, the champion retains the belt if his opponent is not within the weight class limit.

On 21 April in Brooklyn (USA), Haney was defeated by Ryan Garcia by majority decision (112-112, 114-110, 115-109). It should be noted that Garcia failed the weigh-in and could not claim the belt owned by Haney.

Mauricio Sulaiman
Congratulations to Ryan GarcÌa defying all obstacles and winning a huge fight. Congratulations to Devin Haney for showing his huge heart and class.

Just as in Corrales vs Castillo 2 , with the challenger not making weight, Haney remains WBC champion.

Garcia, 25, last fought in December 2023, defeating Oscar Duarte Jurado by knockout in the eighth round. He has 25 wins (20 by knockout) and one loss.

The 25-year-old Haney previously stepped into the ring in December 2023, defeating Regis Prograis by unanimous decision. He has 31 wins (15 by knockout) and one defeat on his record.
