Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter for WBC world light heavyweight champion David Benavidez, is seeking to arrange a bout for his client against the winner of the Arthur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol trilogy in May 2026.
Sampson Lewkowicz quoted by BoxingScene
After watching Canelo Alvarez Saturday night and how he looked, I wouldn't put him in with Benavidez for fear he'd [Canelo] be badly injured. David Benavidez will fight in the fall and then be ready for Cinco de Mayo to face either Bivol or Beterbiev, where the torch will finally be passed to him as the new face of boxing.
Previously, Bivol vacated the WBC title in the light heavyweight category, leading to the decision to recognize interim champion Benavidez as the full champion.
Benavidez last fought David Morrell in February of this year, a match that went the full distance and ended in a unanimous decision in favor of the American. He boasts a record of 30 wins (24 by knockout) and no losses.
