Alonso Explains Why Real Madrid Couldn’t Beat Liverpool in Champions League Clash

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso commented on his team’s 0-1 loss to Liverpool in Matchday 4 of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League league phase.

Xabi Alonso, quoted by Liverpool
It was a demanding game, really fast-paced. We competed well, but we lacked a real threat. The first half was fairly evenly matched, and the second was decided by small margins. We started giving away too many free-kicks and the odd corner. Courtois kept us in it there. The goal gave them the edge, and then we struggled a bit after that.

The only goal of the match was scored by Liverpool’s Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Following this result, Liverpool moved to nine points and currently sit sixth in the Champions League league-phase table, trailing fifth-place Real Madrid only on goal difference.

This victory ended Real Madrid’s six-match unbeaten run.
