Former Belgium national team defender Nicolas Lombaerts has expressed his disappointment over the national team's lack of trophies.
Lombaerts told Telecomasia.net during the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the centenary of Zenit:
Nicolas Lombaerts
The golden generation of the Belgian national team is already leaving. We need to accept that these guys haven’t won any trophies. And there likely won’t be any trophies In the coming years either. I'm sad that the Belgians haven’t claimed any titles, but it’s not the end of the world. Winning trophies is hard, especially for small countries like Belgium.
Belgium's only triumph in tournaments is the gold medal at the 1920 Olympic Games. Additionally, the team has finished second and third in the UEFA European Championships in 1980 and 1972, respectively. In the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia, Belgium secured the bronze medal. Currently, the team ranks eighth in FIFA's world rankings.
