In the qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, in Group J, Belgium secured a convincing home victory over Kazakhstan, beating them 6-0.
The hosts’ key player was midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who scored twice and provided an assist, a contribution that put him into the record books. With that assist, De Bruyne matched Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez for the number of goal assists for their national teams in the 21st century. Both players now have 291 assists. Only Serbia’s Dušan Tadić (292) and Argentina’s Lionel Messi (389) have more.
In the summer transfer window, De Bruyne left English club Manchester City, where he spent many years, for Italian side Napoli.
