Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez, who struck and killed an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair, was not speeding, and tests showed no traces of alcohol or drugs in his blood.
According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, the accident site is considered a high-risk area. Multiple serious accidents have occurred on this road section before. The permitted speed there is 70 km/h, and Martínez was not speeding.
Initially, Martinez was taken to a hospital in Saronno for alcohol and drug testing, which came back negative. He then gave several hours of testimony at the Lomazzo police station with his club-provided lawyer present. Two women who were in a car behind Martinez were also questioned as witnesses, and their statements confirmed his account.
The traffic accident involving the Inter goalkeeper happened Tuesday morning, October 28, in the Como province. Preliminary information suggests the elderly man may have become unwell, causing him to enter the roadway where Martínez’s car was traveling. The player immediately attempted to provide first aid to the victim.
