Former Napoli striker and Belgian national team player Dries Mertens has announced his retirement from professional football, according to NapoliNetwork.
From 2013 to 2022, Mertens played for Napoli, and he spent his last three seasons with Galatasaray. The 38-year-old forward represented Belgium from 2011 to 2022, scoring 21 goals in 109 matches and winning a bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Reports indicate that Mertens' final match will be a farewell game for his former Napoli teammate Marek Hamšík; however, he does not plan to continue playing at a professional level.
