Despite the incident, the match was not stopped.
After the game, head coach of the Spanish national team Luis de la Fuente expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that such events remind of the real values in life. Nuno Mendes, the Portuguese national team defender, also expressed his support, emphasizing that the tragedy overshadowed the joy of victory.
The teams drew 2-2 in regulation and extra time, while Portugal won the penalty shootout 5-3.
