FIFA is testing new technology designed to accurately determine whether the ball has left the field of play before a goal is scored, according to the BBC.
The innovation, titled "Out of Bounds," was among several new technologies trialed during three FIFA Intercontinental Cup matches held this month in Qatar.
Additionally, FIFA has expanded the use of "Real-time 3D Recreation" to provide faster and clearer offside reviews. This system offers two virtual broadcasts – one for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and another for television viewers – both showcasing the perspective from each goalkeeper’s line of sight.
The report notes that FIFA developed these technologies in collaboration with Hawk-Eye Innovations. It is unknown whether there are plans to implement them in domestic leagues. Previously, it was reported that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) intends to discuss potential changes to the offside rule itself.
