FIFA to Update Offside System After Serious Injury to EPL Player

Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) will introduce advanced semi-automatic offside detection technology for VAR at the 2025 Club World Cup.

According to FIFA's official website, this innovation is designed to prevent incidents like the recent incident involving Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who was seriously injured in the 36th round of the EPL match against Leicester City and was put into an artificially induced coma.

FIFA said in a statement that the new technology has already been successfully tested at the Intercontinental Cup in December, as well as at several youth tournaments.

The organization also specified that the system will record the position of the ball and players, automatically notifying referees in real time in case of obvious offsides.

Recall, Taiwo Awoniyi crashed into the bar in the match against Leicester and suffered a serious abdominal injury. He underwent surgery, and has fully recovered.
