
Barcelona SC defender Mario Pineida has died at the age of 33 following a gun attack. This was reported by the club's press service on social media.
Ecuadorian media outlets report that the player's wife also died in the incident, while Pineida’s mother sustained injuries.
The footballer played for the Ecuador national team from 2014 to 2021. During that time, Pineida took part in nine matches, in which he did not record any goals or assists.
Last season, the defender made 12 appearances for Barcelona SC in the domestic league and also featured in two Copa Libertadores matches.
Pineida was a product of the Independiente del Valle academy. He played for the senior team from Sangolqui (Ecuador) from 2012 to 2015 before moving to Barcelona SC. Pineida also played for Brazilian side Fluminense and Ecuadorian club El Nacional.
