The girlfriend of Ajax youth midfielder Mark Verkuijl was tragically killed after being struck by a car, according to ESPN. The incident occurred on December 18 on a road between the towns of Ede and Veenendaal in the Utrecht province.
The 21-year-old woman was hit while out for a run and later died from her injuries in the hospital. The driver, a 54-year-old woman, fled the scene but was apprehended by police at her home later that evening.
A minute’s silence will be held in her honor before the match between Jong Ajax and RKC Waalwijk in the 21st round of the Dutch youth league.
Verkuijl, who is currently recovering from an injury, has yet to make his senior debut for the club. Ajax staff and players have visited the midfielder to offer their condolences.
In the 2025-26 season, Verkuijl has made 10 appearances for Jong Ajax, scoring one goal. Going into Matchday 21, the team has 12 points and is in 20th place. points. The match against Waalwijk is scheduled for December 22.
