Benni McCarthy is looking forward to a re-union with his former teammate at FC Porto Tarik Sektoui with both of them set to be on the opposite ends of the dugout as coaches when Kenya takes on Morocco in a Group A match at the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
The two were brief teammates at FC Porto many years back as players, and will now face off against each other as coaches for the first time ever. Speaking to Telecomasia.net ahead of their duel, coach McCarthy says he is eagerly anticipating the meeting.
We worked together briefly at pre-season while I was with Porto. He came in and just as he was settling in I was on the way to move to England. But we struck a really quick friendship because we were two kids from Africa who were eager to to succeed in Europpe. It will really be great meeting again as coaches. I won’t say it will be like a score to settle because there’s none really, but it would be a great meet up of two young coaches eager to do well.
He says he expects a really tough assignment against the North African giants, and adds that he knows how he will set up his team.
I know a bit about him because he was a really fast winger, very much offensive and definitely this is how he loves to set up his teams. We have watched some of their games and we will make a good plan to contain them. It is definitely a tough one but we are up to the task and we will step out to the pitch and give a good account of ourselves.
Kenya currently tops Group A with four points, and a win or a draw against Morocco, one of the tournament favourites, takes them into the knockout phases.
