Former Liverpool and Wales striker Ian Rush commented on the tragic deaths of Portuguese player Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, a player for Penafiel, who were victims of a car accident in Spain. The news of the death of 28-year-old Jota and his 25-year-old brother Silva broke on July 3.
“Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. At Liverpool we have always regarded ourselves as one big family. Now one of our family has gone, so we all have to join together and help one another. The last few days have shown that. I was invited and intended to attend Diogo’s funeral, but my brother Gerald had passed away last week, I was in the middle of helping with Gerald’s funeral when the news broke about Diogo. He hadn’t been well for a while, but like with Diogo, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. Diogo was a great player, probably the best natural finisher at the club.
He was a real down to earth person, a real gent. He just got on with things. He will be sadly missed. Our lad from Portugal. Forever.
Jota had been with Liverpool since 2020, participating in 182 matches and winning three titles. Before joining Liverpool, Jota represented Wolverhampton, Porto, Atlético Madrid, and Paços de Ferreira.
Last season, Diogo Jota was a key player in Liverpool's triumph in the English Premier League and, in June, he won the Nations League for the second time with the Portugal national team.
It has also been reported that Liverpool will pay Diogo Jota's family the full amount of his contract until its expiration.
